Set in a valley with mountains to the east and west, Portland is situated on both banks of the Willamette River connected by eight bridges in the heart of downtown, at the point where the illamette empties into the Columbia River. Snow-capped Mount Hood, at an elevation of 11,239 feet, is visible from almost anywhere in the city. Portland was settled on the site of today’s business and government concentration, an exciting urban area revitalized by pleasant tree-lined streets and fountains, including the Ira Keller Fountain occupying an entire city block and replicating the sensation of a mountain stream. With its fountains and statues, sidewalks paved with famous quotations, specialty coffee shops and local micro breweries, world class shopping and dining, Portland is not only a great city to walk in but a place to relax and enjoy a wide variety of attractions: the Portland Art Museum with its highly prized collection of Native American exhibits; the Portland Center for Performing Arts; the Oregon History Center; the 35-foot copper statue of “Portlandia” over the entrance of the postmodern Portland Building--all conveniently located downtown.

As corporate headquarters to such giants as Nike, Louisiana-Pacific, and Tektronix, plus the growth of new plants for Intel and other high-technology companies, this city has a diversified manufacturing base. It is also a financial and medical center. Easy access to the Pacific Ocean, combined with service by an international airport and three major railroads, makes this city one of the busiest transportation centers in the West.

Prior to settlement in 1845 by pioneers traveling the Oregon Trail from Missouri to northwest United States., the region was home to several Native American tribes. The city was named by one of its founders, Francis Pettygrove, after his hometown, Portland, Maine. Despite continued growth and expansion in recent years, the city has never lost sight of the quality of life values that have made it one of the most livable communities in the nation.
